  • Civil engineering has a vast scope for research and innovation. New inventions and techniques have a large potential to cause a revolution in terms of sustainable construction, efficient transportation, better design techniques and more sophisticated infrastructure. Advances in Civil Engineering are the order of the day with the rapid industrialization and urbanization seen in developed and developing nations. Innovative design and construction practices are challenging tasks for the engineers to meet the ever-growing demands of society. ICES IIT Bombay intends to bring together leading researchers in this domain of interest from around the world. It looks forward to witnessing and demonstrate the remarkable range of interests being pursued in and beyond the classroom.
    The International Civil Engineering ICES, IIT Bombay (ICES) will act as a platform to exchange ideas and scientific knowledge, through intense professional interaction among the aspiring civil engineering researchers who are inclined towards discovering, learning and innovating new domains. We believe this will lead to fruitful germination of collaborative research work. If you are a research enthusiast and you feel that your research paper has got something extraordinary, Aakaar's ICES IIT Bombay is a platform to showcase your talent in front of eminent professors, industry professionals and talented students in a formal conference.

    1. To encourage participation in civil engineering research area.
    2. To provide an excellent platform for the exchange of new ideas and knowledge among Academia, Industry professionals and Research Scholars.
    3. To give students an exposure to the designing of research papers and paper presentation in a formal conference.

    Aakaar invites all the civil engineering students to attend the ICES, IIT Bombay to explore the various research opportunities ahead in civil engineering irrespective of being an accomplished researcher or any person interested in research and innovation. We will be very honoured and happy to have you as one of our most delightful participants in the international symposium.

    1. Register as a team with a maximum of 3 members
    2. Submit your abstracts before the given deadline
    3. Abstracts will be scrutinized and finalists will be invited to the International Civil Engineering Symposium, IIT Bombay during Aakaar.

    **For the participants outside India, the symposium will be held through video conference

  • An abstract is a concise version of your research presented in a skeletal form, which focuses on the essentials of a larger idea or claim. It should be sufficient enough for reviewers to discern the nature and significance of your research, the fairness in your approach, and the nature of the results or progress to date.

      Four important elements of an abstract-
    • The research focus (i.e. statement of the problem(s)/research issue(s) addressed);
    • The research methods used (experimental research, case studies, questionnaires, etc.);
    • The results/findings of the research;
    • The main conclusions and recommendations

      Abstracts are invited on any topic associated with civil engineering.

    1. You can also include the concept of this year's theme “'SUSTAINABLE AND RESILLIENT INFRASTRUCTURE’' in your abstract. For complete details, please refer to this link.

How to Participate
Problem Statement
  • Technical poster presentation is the presentation of research information or an idea with an academic or professional focus on a poster. For any professional, communicating his/her idea efficiently determines his success professionally. The primary motive of this competition is to enhance the ability of delivering a visual presentation without any other audio/video aids.

    • Register here as a team of maximum two.
    • It is a two-stage competition.
    • Round-1: Identify a problem/topic in any of the civil engineering fields and work on it to give a solution. The problem might be as simple as suggesting a not-so-known application of a research work done in the recent years or an idea to bring sustainability in the current techniques. Identify the problems and issues that are faced on field and give some plausible solutions to those problems.
    • While registering for the competition, state the problem/topic you are going to work on. You must also state the need to address the problem and the impact it would make once the problem is solved. Finalists will be selected based on the problem and the supporting statements.
    • Round-2: Selected students have to pay the nominal registration fee of 200 per team.
    • Final poster has to be made following the rules and sent to the organizers within the prescribed deadline.

  • The theme of the technical poster presentation is “Sustainable and Resilient infrastructure”

      Failure to abide by the following rules will disqualify the poster:
    • Each poster must be no larger than A2 poster (42cm x 59.4cm in landscape mode and the quality of paper should be 210GSM).
    • If you are preparing a poster with your own hands (without printing, by drawing) , make sure you use the same quality of the paper.
    • The poster must be able to stand free on a supporting table by means of one or more vertically hinged joints separating the poster into multiple panels, or by physical supports attached to the back of the poster that is not visible from the front of the poster.
    • Everything to be conveyed must be on the poster and no other materials are allowed.
    • However, ethical policies require credit (acknowledgements) to be given on the poster for any assistance by other students or advisors.
    • The name and affiliation of the author must be in a prominent place(mostly at the top) on the Poster.

    • The poster should be prepared so that it is easily understood in the absence of the author.
    • Neither the author nor any other individuals may be present during the judging.
    • Judging criteria are based solely on the content of the front of the poster.
      The judging criteria will depend on the following aspects:
    1. ORIGINALITY: How original is the concept presented in this poster? Or, how original is the new approach to an old problem?
    2. SIGNIFICANCE: How significant are the poster's conclusions in increasing understanding of a particular technique or the solution?
    3. PRESENTATION: How logical are the ideas presented in this poster? How interesting is the manner of presentation?
    4. METHODS: If applicable, how suitable is the research design for the stated objectives, and how appropriate are any statistical techniques applied?
    5. VISUAL IMPACT: How effective is this poster visually?

    • In any case, the decision of the organizers is abiding and would be deemed final
    • Team Aakaar holds the right to change any rule or restructure the problem statement if required. However, the participants would be informed the same through email.
