The Civil Engineering Department of IIT Bombay which ranks 30th in the world, has been acclaimed among the best rated departments in terms of teaching quality, research contributions, high-end consultancy, outreach, manpower training and academic leadership.
AAKAAR, the annual technical festival of Civil engineering, IIT Bombay, is in its 9th edition. Started back in 2009 by young civil engineers and eminent professors of IIT Bombay, AAKAAR has nurtured itself as India's largest Civil Engineering College festival and is all set to achieve new milestones through various innovative competitions, workshops, lecture series, panel discussions keeping in mind various sectors of civil engineering.
Identifying the potential impact of smart cities on social & economic development of society and supporting the ‘Smart Cities Mission’ which has created a new buzz in the news and social media, AAKAAR with the theme ‘Need Of The Hour: Smartness’ served as a platform to discuss and provide smart and feasible solutions for mitigating the problems being faced by the society.
SMART CITY SUMMIT by AAKAAR was a unique channel, wherein the nascent ideas were clad through the lecturers, strengthened in the panel discussions and in due course pitched in the competitions.
Being part of a responsible institute of the country, Aakaar-2016 had also taken up a Social cause - “CONSTRUCTION SITE SAFETY” awareness among the fledgling civil engineers of the nation, taking in account the severe unfamiliarity about site safety in India. NCESS ( National Civil Engineering Students' Symposium ) is a platform for young and budding researchers of the nation to present their work in front of the most experienced professors of the country in the respective fields, civil engineering leaders and industrialists and up against the best civil engineering students in the country! Aakaar’s Symposium is one of the largest of its kind in the country in terms of participation and has showcased the best of student research papers and presentations, with professionals in the civil engineering domain as audience. Research papers are invited in different fields such as Concrete Engineering,Hydraulic Engineering,Geotechnical Engineering,Transportation Engineering, Construction Management to name a few. In a total of 140 teams registered, 40 were able to make it to the final stage and presented their research on diversified fields at IIT Bombay during Aakaar.
Competition plays host to a plenty of activities, giving the opportunity to interact and compete with the brightest minds of the country. We try to put up new and innovative competitions every year to develop a keen interest among participants for civil structures. This year, we organised :
And there were some online competitions also launched. One of which was a software competition by Bentley. Two Industrial Design Problems(IDPs) were collectively launched by Lafarge and Owens Corning.
Apart from the nerve-wrecking competitions, Aakaar also provides a fine opportunity to try your hands at professional softwares, get insight from pre-eminent industrialists and academicians through lecture series, opportunity to visit the best equipped laboratories in the country and get creative with your knowledge to have fun with total strangers. The main purpose of the fest is to promote cross cultural miscellany and provide a joint platform for students of the Civil Engineering Fraternity from all strata of society to interact and assist the flow of knowledge. Various informal events are held to connect the participants with each other and expand their social group.
Apart from main events and activities during the festival, we had launched many informal activities in Aakaar page and website .Monday materials was a series of articles released on a weekly basis on materials form the basis of everything around us, in general and even more so in the civ il engineering. Tuesday Teasers was an online Civil Engineering Crossword Competition and it received humongous response . We also have Akshar blog for aakaar where we provided documentation regarding various civil related things ,intern extravaganza where many students share their intern experience and many more.
We strive to achieve excellence every year through our constant efforts to showcase an extravaganza which is a benchmark in terms of the sheer variety of events happening and their execution exuding professionalism and sophistication of the highest order.
