Resource optimization is the set of processes and methods to match the available resources (human, machinery, financial) with the needs of the organization in order to achieve established goals.Optimization consists in achieving desired results within a set timeframe and budget with minimum usage of the resources themselves. Resource Optimization is the efficient and effective deployment of an organization's resources when they are needed. Such resources may include financial resources, inventory, human skills, production resources, or information technology (IT)
Population explosion in last few decades has put a lot of pressure on our Resources and this has led to over exploitation. With the Industrialization and urbanization of modern society, the use of resources is increasing day by day. Exploitation of resources ultimately leads to their exhaustion. Resources are hardly left to the future generations to continue the legacy of mankind on this planet. The need to optimize resources is particularly evident when the organization’s demands tend to saturate and/or exceed the resources currently available.
Construction Project refers to a high stake endeavour aiming at time bound predetermined performance objective. Unless matching resources are planned and procured, no activity can be executed according to a prefixed time schedule. Project managers must take complex decisions under different scheduling needs (such as smooth resource utilization profiles and resource constraints) and under conditions of uncertainty that sometimes extend beyond task durations.
The crucial factor in successful implementation of a construction project not only depends on the quality & quantity of work, but also largely depends on availability of resources. All activities involved in the project require certain amount of resources. Each activity is allocated with a specific resource and must be completed within the time limit, otherwise it may adversely affect the overall duration of the project.
The time and cost are directly dependent on the availability of resources. The time required may be determined by dividing the productivity associated with the resources used on the activity into the defined quantity of work for the activity. The best combination of resources to use for performing a construction activity is based on contractor’s ability to identify the interdependencies of the various resources.
Managing an organization is about managing finite resources: people, machines, money, etc. The ‘conventional’ way to do that is to extract and exploit the maximum capacity from every element of the system. People may commonly believe that by doing this, they are achieving maximum efficiency. In other words, the reasoning is that if I can make machines work 100% of the time, I will achieve the maximum for the system.
However, this is far from the truth, and at least for two reasons. First the interdependencies among the different parts of the system (interactions behave non-linearly).Secondly, variation that affects all processes.
