ICES OF AAKAAR 2021

Aakaar IIT Bombay is proud to launch its fifth International Civil Engineering Symposium, with a prime motive of encouraging young research enthusiasts in the field of civil engineering to engage in vigorous research and take civil engineering to a whole new level.

ICES, IIT Bombay intends to bring together leading researchers in this domain of interest from around the world. It looks forward to witnessing and demonstrate the remarkable range of interests being pursued in and beyond the classroom.

The International Civil Engineering Symposium (ICES) will act as a platform to exchange ideas and scientific knowledge through intense professional interaction among the aspiring civil engineering researchers who are inclined towards discovering, learning and innovating new domains. We believe this will lead to fruitful germination of collaborative research work.

If you are a research enthusiast and feel that your research paper has got something extraordinary then Aakaar, IIT Bombay presents to you ICES 2021 to showcase your talent in front of eminent professors, industrial professionals and talented students in a formal conference.

ABOUT THE THEMES

In this edition of ICES, Aakaar 2021, we are accepting papers under three themes for the Paper Presentation. They are:

  1. Rehabilitation and Retrofitting of Infrastructures
  2. Technology Trends in Civil Engineering
  3. Life Cycle Assessment and Sustainability

Civil Engineering has a vast scope for research and innovation. It has been in existence since BC times. Civil engineering practices involve multitasking where there is a high probability of challenges. We need solutions to overcome these challenges to create a better world.By keeping our themes so, we are not restricting the inputs to any particular topic. We have kept this keeping in mind the current undergoing research in the field of civil engineering. We encourage everyone to participate and to present their work even if they feel it doesn’t fall under this year’s themes. The themes are elaborated below

1. REHABILITATION AND RETROFITTING OF INFRASTRUCTURES:

Rehabilitation is a process of reconstruction and renewal of a facility or structural elements of a structure to meet the present needs, matching the original structure. This process involves removing damaged materials by determining the origin and causes of distress, as well as applying appropriate repair materials that could extend a structure’s life.

Retrofitting is assessing the existing condition of the structure and deciding which component of the structure is to be repaired or restored based on the upcoming future to strengthen the structure. It involves changing its systems or structure after its initial construction and occupation improving amenities for the building’s occupants and the performance of the building. Building retrofits can significantly reduce energy and water usage which could be key to combating climate change.Many research topics like Risk Management, Disaster Management come under this. By keeping this theme, we encourage all the related papers that can create a huge impact on the Construction Industry.

2. TECHNOLOGY TRENDS IN CIVIL ENGINEERING:

Technology has hit the construction industry like never before. These technologies are dramatically changing operations in the industry which further decides how future projects will be performed. These technologies will help us save so much time and capital and hence significant improvement in the Construction field. Some of these major technologies include:

Artificial Intelligence (AI): In recent years there has been a great increase in the applications of AI in civil as well as in other branches and it will continue to increase in upcoming years. It is benefiting the construction projects through increased safety and improvement in workflows. Getting jobs done faster and better is the main focus of every industry nowadays.

Machine Learning (ML): Machine learning is considered as a subset of artificial intelligence. It is an application of artificial intelligence (AI) that provides systems the ability to automatically learn and improve from experience without being explicitly programmed.It has relevant applications in Civil engineering.

3D Printing: Materials for a project can be printed and then transported to the job site, ready for use immediately. With 3D Printing it will even be possible to print materials right on site, reducing waste and further saving on transportation and storage costs. Similarly, there are a lot more upcoming technologies that give the construction industry a great push. The variety of applications of every such technology helps in making the construction easy and efficient from every angle. By keeping this theme, we encourage all papers on any upcoming and helpful technologies that can create a potential impact on the Construction Industry.

3. LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT (LCA) AND SUSTAINABILITY:

LCA stands for life cycle assessment. It is a technique or method which is used for analyzing the environmental impacts on products or services throughout the life cycle. The assessment comprises the whole life cycle of materials product, process or activity, encompassing, extraction and process of raw material, manufacturing, recycling, maintenance, and final disposal. In life cycle assessment the process involved from the excavation of raw materials to waste disposal.

Sustainability is a very important factor that has to be considered during construction. Given the high range of constructions happening, the environmental pollution and validity of materials have to be taken into account. LCA provides the groundwork for any sustainability. Sustainability in the real world means any action that reduces our consumption of energy without harming the environment. This assessment drives any company to produce more sustainable products. LCA promotes awareness in value chain actors on sustainability issues.The goal of LCA is to evaluate the full range of environmental effects ceded to product and service by estimating all inputs and outputs of materials. Its goal is also to think about the flow of energy and matter involved in the manufacturing, product, materials, and process, etc. There is a need for a greater amount of research to be done for the development and application of LCA in Civil Engineering. By keeping this theme, we encourage all the related papers that can create a significant impact on the Construction Industry.

KEY INTENTIONS:

1. To encourage participation in the civil engineering research area.
2. To provide an excellent platform for an exchange of new ideas and knowledge among Academia, Industry professionals, and Research Scholars.
3. To give students exposure to the designing of research papers and paper presentations at a formal conference.

HOW TO REGISTER?

1. Register as a team with a maximum of 3 members.
2. You’ll have to submit your abstracts when specified.
3. Abstracts will be scrutinized and finalists will be invited to present in the International Civil Engineering Symposium (ICES) 2021.

Registration Rules: 

  1. The team should consist of a maximum of three members and no team member should present in more than one group
  2. You are required to submit an authentication letter (signed by your mentor) confirming that you are doing the research for which you have submitted the abstract. Note that IIT Bombay students are not required to submit an authentication letter.
  3. Download the blank authentication letter from here. Please fill it completely and then scan it.
  4. The details for the submission of the authentication letter and abstract will be provided to the registered candidates soon after the registration.

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS:

An abstract is a concise version of your research presented in skeletal form, which focuses on the essentials of a larger idea or claim. It should be sufficient enough for reviewers to discern the nature and significance of your research, the fairness in your approach, and the nature of the results or progress to date.

Four important elements of an abstract-

1. The research focus (i.e. statement of the problem(s)/research issue(s) addressed);
2. The research methods used (experimental research, case studies, questionnaires, etc.);
3. The results/findings of the research;
4. The main conclusions and recommendations

Abstracts are invited on any topic associated with civil engineering. The topic can belong to any of the following fields:

1. Construction Management and Methods
2. Concrete Technology and Building Materials
3. Geotechnical Engineering
4. Hydraulic and Water Resources Engineering/Ocean Engineering
5. Remote Sensing (GPS/GIS)
6. Structural Engineering
7.Transportation Engineering
8.Environmental Engineering
9.Energy Science and Engineering

NOTE:

1. You can include the concept of the above-mentioned themes in your abstract. For complete details about the theme, please refer to the Introduction.
2. While submitting an Abstract please make sure to follow our ‘Guidelines for the Abstract’. Abstracts not adhering to these guidelines will be turned down.

Guidelines for the Abstract: 

1. Download the abstract word template
2. In the template provided, you should click and enter text directly in the boxes provided.
3. Complete all fields: Poster title, Name (if multiple authors then separate names by a comma), Advisor name, Abstract, keywords, and Category.
4. Make sure that Title is in Times New Roman, font size 14 (Bold), center-aligned, all letters capital, and proper names only, followed by a single blank line.
5. Author and Advisor names should be in Times New Roman, font size 11, italicized, right-aligned, followed by affiliation in the next line.
6. The abstract should be of 150-300 words.
7. After completing the above procedure save your file as “LastName-FirstName_ICES21_Abstract” (Last name and first name of the first author mentioned in the abstract) in word’s default file format (.docx) and wait for further instructions about the submission.

Please note that your abstract will be reviewed by our review committee. Therefore, you are requested to submit a high-quality version of your abstract approved by your mentor. Any plagiarism will lead to disqualification.
