Design Philosophy of MTHL Bridge

Aakaar, IIT Bombay is proud to launch the “10 Days Design Challenge” in association with TATA Projects on Design Philosophy of MTHL Bridge. Mumbai Island, the narrow stretch of land that has traditionally been the epicenter of India’s commerce, has seen a steady increase in population in the last three decades despite obvious spatial constraints. Therefore the development of Navi Mumbai has been identified as an urgent requirement for easing the pressure on the island. However, lack of easy connectivity to the mainland has stunted this growth and the pressure on the island’s infrastructure continues to


The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) is proposed to be developed as an Expressway link comprising of a dual three-lane carriageway bridge connecting Sewri on Mumbai Island to Nhava on the mainland. MTHL is proposed to commence at grade from the east side of Sewri Railway Station on Harbour Line of Central Railway further to Timber Pond Depot along with Sewri Container Depot and terminate north of Chirle village near Nhava through an interchange to National Highway 4B.
When completed, MTHL will reduce the distance between the island and the mainland by approximately 17km viz-a-viz the existing road link and will help save approximately an hour in travel time. Also, the development of mainland Mumbai along with the imminent construction of the Navi Mumbai airport will lead to increased traffic between the mainland and the island. Consequently, the project is envisaged to be completed on a Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT) basis, as a tolled model with an associated revenue model.

Key Features of the proposed MTHL

• The Link will have a 6-lane facility exclusively for the use of fast moving vehicles with
controlled access and connection to Eastern Freeway in the Island city of Mumbai and NH 4B near Chirle village on the main land.
• A minimum vertical clearance of 25.2 m below the bridge above the highest High Tide Level (HHTL) of + 5.8m will be provided for navigational spans, while the minimum vertical clearance of 9.1 m above HHTL is provided elsewhere.
• 1.5 m wide central median with appropriate landscaping to enhance the environment as well as to avoid glare.
• Overall width of deck (~27 m) consists of 11.25 m wide carriageway with 0.7 m wide utility corridor on either side of the carriage way. Anti crash barriers are provided at the edge of carriageway for protection of fast moving traffic. Provision of fenders for the protection of foundations against ship impact is provided in the navigational spans.
• Foundations are proposed to be large diameter bored piles with substructure of wall type pier.
• The superstructure of the standard span is proposed to be in match cast segmental construction in pre-stressed concrete and cast-in-situ with single cell box girders at interchange location.

3. The shortlisted participants will be informed about the date and time of the final presentation round, held on 27 March 2022 (Sunday).
4. The shortlisted participants will present their solution for designing the MTHL Bridge to an esteemed panel of jury members of TATA Projects.


Registration Rules

1. The team should consist of a maximum of three members and no team member should present in more than one group

2. Registration starts online, 17th March,2022 and the deadline to submit final solution presentation, March 24th, 2022

3.Final round of presentation in front of jury panel deadline, March 27th, 2022
